Florida shooting calls for action
Spokane, WA, Feb. 15, 2018 -- Lisa Brown released the following statement after the shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida.
Five months ago, a parent’s worst nightmare became reality at Freeman High School, near Spokane. That trauma surfaced again this week with a mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida. Most Americans believe our leaders could do more to prevent these shootings. Congress must act. Doing nothing is unacceptable.
No remedy will stop every violent incident, but there are steps Congress can take to reduce gun violence risks. It can strengthen the background check system. It can allow the Centers for Disease Control to study gun violence as a public health issue.
I support the formation of the proposed bi-partisan Select Committee to take an in-depth look into the issue and propose solutions. It should’ve been done long ago.
Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers said “we have more to learn,” but it’s the same pattern after every horrible shooting - express condolences and move on. She and House leadership should act today, and not wait for the next tragedy to unfold.
